Eleven (11) tips to stop your nail polish from chipping

October 04, 2021 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

We've all had it happen: after perfecting our manicure, we look down and realize our nail polish has chipped. It's frustrating and annoying to see all that hard work go to waste.

While many of us may blame nail polish formulas, the problem could actually be the application technique. With these simple tricks, you can extend the life of your manicure and prevent chips.

  1. Always wipe each nail with remover before applying polish. Then wash your hands with soap and water to get rid of any remaining oil.
  2. Do not file your nails in different directions. If you're treating your nail file like a saw, you're making your nails more prone to peeling and breakage.
  3. Buff your nails. This will remove any residue and get rid of ridges.
  4. Apply a base coat. Polish will adhere best to nails prepped with a base coat. Not only does a basecoat protect your nails from stains, but it also fills ridges and strengthens nails.
  5. Do not shake the bottle. Simply roll your nail polish bottle between the palms of your hands. If you shake the bottle, you’re more likely to get air bubbles on application.
  6. Apply your nail polish in thin layers. Thinner coats have a lower risk of smudging than thick coats. If the first layer is streaky, do not worry, this can be covered up with your second layer.
  7. Seal the tip of your nail.  Once you’ve painted your nailbed, drag some polish horizontally across the top edge of your nail. This will seal the polish, making it less likely to chip.
  8. Ensure that you let each layer dry before you apply the next. If you're not waiting at least a couple of minutes before applying another coat, you're not giving the solvents in the polish enough time to evaporate.
  9. Apply a topcoat. Topcoats extend the life of your manicure. Brush the topcoat on and around the edges of nails as well.
  10. Allow proper drying time. After about 45 minutes of drying time, submerge your nails in cold water, then apply lotion. This allows for a slippery surface until nails are completely dry.
  11. Keep a topcoat handy. Reapplying a topcoat every two to three days will help your manicure last longer.

I hope you find these tips helpful!

Six beauty trends to ditch in 2016

January 20, 2016 3 Comments
Hello everyone!

So it's already January 20th and this is my first post in 2016.  My year started with a lot of internet connection problems, but hopefully that issue is resolved (fingers crossed).

So let's get started!  From mid-length haircuts to no-light gel nail polishes (which I ❤), 2015 brought us a lot of beauty trends, but there are a few trends that I think should be left behind.  Check out the six beauty trends to ditch in 2016:
  1. Instagram eyebrows - The Instagram brow or the faded eyebrow, is very popular among MUAs because it photographs well, but in person, it is very odd-looking.
  2. Heavy contour: Contouring has been around for years but it reached new heights in 2015 with techniques like clown contouring.
  3. Waist trainers: While many believe that wearing a waist trainer will help them get an hour glass shape, the results are only temporary and can cause some health problems.
  4. Overdrawn lips: Thanks to Kylie Jenner, the obsession with lips got a little out of control in 2015.
  5. Crazy nail art and nail shapes:  Whether nude or coloured, claw-shaped nails need to go away.  In 2016, file your nails into a squoval for a more natural look.
  6. Insanely long extensions: This year it's all about texture and short, chic cuts.  Everyone is going short, so now's the time to take the plunge, just go for it.
These are six beauty trends I really don't like!  I prefer the natural look, at least for everyday; natural make-up, nails, hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc.  If you are a fan of any of the trends I mentions, I'm not judging!  Fashion and make-up should be means of self-expression, so DO YOU, always!

What is your least favourite trend?  Is there a beauty trend you just can't stand?

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Revamped gel manicure

May 07, 2014 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

Remember the glitter gel manicure I showed you in my previous NOTD post?  Well it's been two weeks and as you can see in the photos below, now it doesn't look as good!

I don't want to remove it yet (I'm worried the process will damage my nails), so I decided to revamp it!

On my glitter nails, I used a Shimmery Burgundy nail polish to paint a v-shape over the gap between my cuticles and the gel.  I also applied two coats of  the same polish over the teal colour.  I sealed this manicure with one coat of top coat, as usual.

I really like the shimmery burgundy and gold colour combination!

With this revamped mani I hope I can put off removing the gel for at least a week, allowing my nail to grow a little longer.

Do you like my revamped gel mani?  Tell me in the comments below!

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): St. Patrick's Day - Shamrock

March 16, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and  this is a super easy way to decorate your nails for the occasion!

Paint the leaves in a V-shape, just like the Valentine's Day hearts.

Did you know?
According to legend, Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Have you got anything special planned?

DIY: Nail art dotting tools

November 02, 2013 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today I want to talk to you about dotting tools.
Nail art dotting tools come in a variety of sizes and are used to help create dot and circle patterns.

How to use: As you probably know, just dip the end of your dotting tool in nail polish, and dot away!

It’s also easy to create your own nail dotting tools using stuff you have lying
around at home.  I use these all the time to create polka dot designs. (Check out some of my designs below!

Here's how you can make four different DIY dotting tools.  Enjoy!

1

From micro points to polka dots, a toothpick is an obvious and most popular choice for dotting.  Be sure to purchase picks with flattened bases for an extra shape to play around with!

2

Bobby pins are another cheap and convenient alternative.  Just bend them out straight, and use the round tips at the end like regular dotting tool.

3

You can also use ballpoint pens.  I suggest that you use an old one with no ink left.

4

You can also create your own dotting tool by sticking a straight pin into the eraser end of a pencil.  I really like this one because if you use a bigger straight pin, you'll have bigger dots, while with a smaller straight pin,  you'll have smaller dots.  It's very versatile.

Well, there you have it.  Have fun experimenting!  And here's a little nailspiration...

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Silver crackle

October 22, 2013 1 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today's post is a double NOTD post!  My mum and I are both wearing  Silver Crackle nail polish.  Check out both looks below and vote for who wore it better! ;)

This is what I am wearing on my nails today...

I applied one coat of Sparkling Black nail polish and one coat of Silver Crackle on my thumb and ring finger nails.

My mum is wearing Silver Crackle on top of a Shimmery Burgundy polish...

Tips:

The thinner you apply the crackle polish, the smaller the cracks with look.
Never try to apply two coats of crackle nail polish.

Do you like the end results?  Who wore it better me or my mum? ;)  Let me know in the comment section below.

Jack-o'-lantern nails

This nail art is very easy to make.  All you will need for this jack-o'-lantern manicure is an orange nail polish, a black nail polish and a clear topcoat.

Tip: The detailing of the eyes, nose and mouth can be done with a nail art striper brush.  If you don't own one, you can use an old liquid eyeliner brush.
Will you be wearing Halloween inspired nail art this year?

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Birthday confetti

May 30, 2013 3 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today is my 28th birthday and this is a special NOTD post! (tutorial below J)

These are the perfect nails for your birthday or any fun spring/summer event.

I started with a coat of white polish, the white will make the bright colours on top of it pop!  Then I used a dotting tool/head of a bobby pin dipped in the polish to create the confetti.  I used neon pink, orange and orange glitter.  To create some contrast and add some sparkle, I finished with a gold glitter top coat.

I love the end result!  I hope you like it too.

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Christmas tree nails

December 11, 2012 1 Comments

Hello everyone!
Christmas is almost here and today I'm going to do a Christmas nail art tutorial… hope you like it!

 “I'm the happiest Christmas tree,
hoo hoo hoo, hee hee hee…” J

What I used:
  • Base coat
  • Gold nail polish (background)
  • Dark green nail polish (tree)
  • Red and green glitter polishes (lights)
  • Orange glitter polish (star tree topper)
  • Top coat

You can use any other colour combinations you like and you could also use nail rhinestones as toppers!

Step 1:
Apply base coat.

Step 2:
Apply 2 coats of your base colour to all your finger nails.

Step 3:
Decide which nails you want to decorate with a Christmas tree and draw a green triangle on those nails.  I chose to decorate one nail on each hand but you could do all ten nail if you wish.

Step 4:
Apply the glitter polish/s on top of the green polish.

I applied a red glitter polish

Step 5:
Apply a dot of orange glitter polish on top of your tree or you could also use nail rhinestones as toppers!

I added a green glitter polish

Step 6:
Apply top coat and you're done!

How are you going to decorate your nails this holiday season?

XOXO
