Fact or Fiction? #4 - Curly hair myths, debunked!

Hello everyone!

I have not published a Fact or Fiction? post in such a long time, but this is, actually, my fourth beauty myths post. These posts are meant to debunk common beauty myths and misconceptions. For this fourth (4th) post, I chose to focus on curly hair. 

I have a loose curl pattern (2c/3a) and, I have been wearing my hair naturally, on and off, for over a decade. I haven't straightened my hair in almost two and a half years! Needless to say, I learned quite a few tips and tricks along this journey. I found a lot of helpful information online, but also a lot of misinformation such as:

1. Do not wash your hair more than once a week.

There is no one golden rule when it comes to hair cleansing. If you don’t wash your hair enough, it will become flat and greasy. If you wash it too often, it will be dry and frizzy. You should wash your hair when it needs to be cleansed.

2. You only have curly hair if you don’t have to scrunch it.

Some people believe that if your hair is not curly while wet, you don’t have curly hair. Wet hair is elongated and weighed down with water. Thus, the curl or wave pattern is hidden. This is why shrinkage happens, where curly hair often looks shorter when dry.

3. You can use high heat to diffuse your hair without causing damage.

Many believe that since the diffuser attachment diffuses the heat, it will not cause damage. Unfortunately, the truth is that heat always leads to some damage. If you must use heat, use it as little as possible, and always protect your hair with a heat protectant.

4. Wash your hair with conditioner only.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Applying conditioner on wet hair and rinsing it out is moisturising hair, not washing it. If you want to cleanse your hair, you need to use a shampoo, cleansing conditioner or a co-wash. These products contain ingredients that help remove dirt, impurities and product buildup. 

5. Silicones and sulphates damage your hair.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

This is a core rule of the Curly Girl Method (CGM) and a huge misconception:

Silicones coat the hair and cover up the damage. As they build up, the most efficient way to remove them is by using sulphate shampoo. However, sulphates strip natural oils, causing dryness, frizz and damage. Thus, creating a vicious cycle. According to the CGM, you should never ever use them.

Silicones are not inherently bad for hair; water-insoluble silicones do build up on the hair shaft and are difficult to remove, however, water-soluble ones are easily removed with gentle shampoos, including sulfate-free shampoos.

Sulphates can be damaging to your hair. But they can also have some benefits; without cleansing sulphates, sebum quickly builds up on the scalp. This buildup will lead to a lot of itchiness, flakes, and over time this can lead to hair loss. Sulfate-free shampoos are an excellent option for most curlies, but if you feel the need to use a shampoo that contains sulphates, you can do so. The secret is to dilute it with water, only apply it to the hair roots and, alternate its use with a more moisturising shampoo. 

6. You must follow the Curly Girl Method.

I think the Curly Girl Method is a good starting point for learning how to take care of curly hair, but it’s not the end-all-be-all of curly hair care. The truth is, it takes a lot of trial and error to find what works for your hair.

Hello everyone!

As you can see from the title, this post is all about beauty myths.  I haven't posted a Fact or Fiction? post in such a long time, but this is actually my third "beauty myths" post.  Let's get started!

Fact or Fiction?

1. Dry skin will give you wrinkles.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Wrinkles are caused by a lot of things but dry skin is not one of them.

2. Toothpaste can heal pimples.

Fact or Fiction? Fact.

Ingredients found in toothpaste have been shown to dry pimples.  However, use cautiously because the harsh chemicals found in toothpaste can also irritate and over-dry your skin.

3. Tight ponytails and buns can make your hair fall out.

Fact or Fiction? Fact.

Tight hairstyles can add stress to hair follicles and cause breakage.  Try to keep tight styles to a minimum. I wrote a blog post about this subject titled Give your hair a break, check it out!

4. Rubbing your eyes causes wrinkles

Fact or Fiction? Fact.

Rubbing your eyes doesn't directly cause wrinkles, but the pulling motion causes the thin skin around the eyes to crease, which over time leads to the appearance of premature ageing.

5. Rinsing with cold water after shampooing makes hair shinier.

Fact or Fiction? Fact.

Cold water closes the hair follicles, giving it a glossy finish.

6.  The neck ages faster than the face.

Fact or Fiction? Fact.

The skin on the neck is a little thinner than the face and the muscle and skin tissue are also weaker than the face.

Fact or Fiction? - Beauty myths, debunked! #2

Hello everyone!

Today I have another Fact or Fiction? post for you.  It’s time to test your beauty knowledge, again!  Find out which of these commonly held beliefs are true and which ones are just myths.

1. You can shrink your pores.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

At least, mostly fiction.  For instance, an egg-white mask can minimize your pores, but only temporarily.  You can't make pores physically smaller.

2. Wearing polish will turn your nails yellow.

Fact or Fiction? Fact. 

Wearing dark polish can make your fingernail and toenails appear yellowish because the polish stains your nails.  Don’t worry though; you can use one of these 3 methods to whiten yellow nails

3. Wearing high heels can give you varicose veins.

Fact or Fiction? Fact. 

The pressure caused by standing up, especially in high heels, can lead to varicose veins.

4. Crossing your legs can give you varicose veins.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Standing up, especially with high heel shoes puts pressure on your legs, not sitting with your legs crossed, and it’s that pressure that can cause varicose veins.

5. Cocoa butter or olive oil can get rid of stretch marks.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Stretch marks  are caused by tearing of the dermis, which over time may diminish, but will not disappear completely.  Cocoa butter and olive oil can’t penetrate that deep into the skin.

6. A beer rinse will give you thicker hair.

Fact or Fiction? Fact. 

Using beer as a final rinse will make your hair thicker until the next  wash, but it will also make you smell like a pub.  Yikes!

Hypoallergenic means you won't have any negative reactions to the product.

Fact or Fiction? - Beauty myths, debunked!

Hello everyone!

It’s time to test your beauty knowledge!  With so many beauty myths out there, it’s hard to know fact from fiction.  Find out which of these commonly held beliefs are true and which ones are entirely false. 

1. Hypoallergenic means you won't have any negative reactions to the product.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Hypoallergenic simply means that most people won't react negatively to it, not that you definitely won't. 

2. If you have oily skin you shouldn't use facial oils.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Facial oils aren't just for dryer skin types.  Not only does oil-prone skin need hydration, but adding oil can actually help the skin produce less oil in the long run.  Oils also assist in healing scaring and hydrating the skin.

3. You can’t smell your own perfume. 

Fact or Fiction? Fact. 

Your nose can become accustomed to your signature scent.  Beware, just because you become less sensitive to your regular fragrance, doesn't mean everyone else does!

4. Pluck a grey hair and seven more will appear.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

It’s physically impossible to increase the number of follicles you have on your head as a result of plucking out a hair.

5. You must use anti-aging creams over the age of 30.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

This is not a rule; whilst one person may notice fine lines beginning to appear in their twenties, another may not notice the first signs of aging until well into their thirties.

6. Shaving makes hair grow back thicker and darker.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction.

Shaving gives the hair a blunt tip.  The tip might feel coarse or "stubbly" as it grows out.  During this phase, the hair might be more noticeable and perhaps appear darker or thicker, but it's not.
