DIY: Soothing and collagen-producing (vegan) face mask

January 17, 2022 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

Today I want to share another vegan DIY beauty recipe with you, this time a soothing and collagen-producing face mask. All you need are three simple ingredients you probably already have at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • ½ a cup of cooked oats
  • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon

banana, cooked oats and cinnamon

Here's how it works:

  • Bananas are amongst the top three most nutritious fruits. They contain large amounts of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine and vitamin A, B, E, and F. Vitamin A in bananas promotes skin-cell turnover.
  • Applying cooked oatmeal to the skin can reduce skin redness and inflammation.
  • Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde (the organic compound that gives cinnamon its flavour and colour), which increases collagen levels. This means that when cinnamon is applied to the skin or ingested, collagen levels will increase.

Method:

  1. Cook the oatmeal.
  2. Mash the ripe banana in a bowl and add to the oatmeal.
  3. Add the cinnamon.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Allow the oatmeal to cool and then apply to the face.
  6. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Rinse with tepid water.

DIY: Post-holiday detox face mask

January 05, 2022 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

Now that all the presents have been opened, the delicious food devoured, and the decorations are starting to come down, you probably think you need a detox. What better way to kick off the new year than by taking care of your skin with a DIY detox mask

Let's make one thing clear: strictly speaking, the holidays and comfort food are not toxic! You do not need to "detox" from them! However, a detoxifying face mask is always a good idea!

To make this DIY mask, you will need only four simple ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp crushed ripe blueberries.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice.
  • 1 tbsp cucumber juice.
  •  2 tbsp baking soda.
cucumbers and blueberries

Blueberries contain antioxidants that protect your body from free radicals.

Lemon juice contains citrus enzymes that brighten the skin.

Cucumber juice has a cooling, soothing, de-puffing and refreshing effect.

Baking soda helps dislodge blackheads; its granules will give you extra exfoliation.

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Apply mask onto your face.
  3. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Wet your fingers with warm water and gently massage your face.
  5. Gently wash off and pat your face dry.

This mask will give you a glowing complexion! Try it and let me know your thoughts.

What are the benefits of activated charcoal?

December 01, 2021 1 Comments

 Hello everyone!

Activated charcoal is a type of charcoal that’s processed to make it more porous. The World Health Organization has approved activated charcoal for the emergency treatment of overdoses or poisonings. Due to its powerful toxin-clearing properties, activated charcoal is a popular treatment for a variety of conditions.

There are many health benefits of activated charcoal, such as; eliminating gas and bloating, teeth whitening, skin surface cleaning and more. Activated charcoal that comes from a natural source is not only safe but effective for detoxification.

Activated charcoal is readily available in the market in various forms:

  • Powder
  • Tablets
  • Pills
  • Capsules
  • Liquids suspensions

activated charcoal powder

These are the top uses of activated charcoal:

Teeth whitening and oral care

The most popular use of activated charcoal is teeth whitening. Activated charcoal promotes good oral health and maintains the pH balance in the mouth.

Many oral health products that contain activated charcoal claim to have various benefits, such as being:

  • antiviral
  • antibacterial
  • antifungal
  • detoxifying

Detoxify skin

An activated charcoal mask is excellent for clearing the skin from acne and blemishes. It also acts as an anti-ageing ingredient by trapping impurities that cause skin ageing. Researchers have reported that activated charcoal can help draw microparticles, such as; dirt, dust, chemicals, toxins, and bacteria, to the skin surface.

Filtering your water

Many popular water filters use activated charcoal, including the Brita filters. It works the same in water filters as it does in the body; by binding to toxic materials and filtering them out of your water.

Alleviate gas and bloating

This use of activated charcoal is not known by many people. Activated charcoal works by binding the byproducts from the food that causes gas and discomfort.

Because activated charcoal is not absorbed by the body, it can carry the toxins bound to its surface out of the body.

Activated charcoal is considered a universal antidote. To date, there have been no adverse reactions noted with activated charcoal in any of its various forms. However, one should take the advice of a health care professional about any concern regarding its internal usage.

People taking medications should talk to their doctor before taking oral activated charcoal products. These products may interfere with the absorption of medications.

November 27, 2021 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

In most cases, having the flu means increasing self-care and waiting for the infection to run its course. The go-to solution for many people is to reach for over-the-counter medicines. However, another effective method is using essential oils as a topical rub or for aromatherapy. I already shared my recipe for a homemade vapour rub in a previous post. In this post, I will focus on aromatherapy!

Certain essential oils can help alleviate flu symptoms by clearing your nasal passage and reducing headaches. Some oils may even have antiviral benefits to help treat infections and reduce fever. Essential oils can be a great ally in keeping viruses, bacteria and germs at bay. As we are currently facing a pandemic, these oils can come in handy to help you keep your home a safe place for you and your loved ones. That is why today, I'm sharing the best antiviral essential oils to diffuse in your home.

Inhalation is the most beneficial way to use essential oils for the flu. A diffuser can be an easy way to get the benefits of aromatherapy, any time of day or night. Purifying your indoor air is very easy to do. Using pure essential oils is a natural and safe way to do so.

Add essential oils blends below to your diffuser with recommended water for your diffuser tank!

There are some blends for cleaning the air:

  • Eucalyptus/Lavender
  • Eucalyptus/Geranium
  • Eucalyptus/Lemon

Four (4) DIY vegan scalp scrubs

November 19, 2021 0 Comments

 Hello everyone!

Many of us regularly use face and body scrubs to remove dead skin cells. However, we may be neglecting a part of our body that needs exfoliation just as much. The scalp is no different than the skin on the rest of our body. Our scalp can benefit from a little extra TLC as well!

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp! Daily use of hair products can cause build-up. In addition to typical dead skin cells accumulating on the scalp. This can result in clogged hair follicles, dull, greasy hair, and slower hair growth. To return the scalp to a healthy state, you need to free hair follicles from what’s building up at the roots. A scalp scrub might be the best solution.

If you’re looking for natural DIY scalp scrubs, here are four (4) easy DIY vegan recipes that can cure and prevent dry, flaky scalp, improve scalp health and overall hair health.

sugar scrub

Ingredients:

DIY vegan scalp scrub #1
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of vegan shampoo
  • a few drops of lavender essential oil

DIY vegan scalp scrub #2
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt (ideal for oily scalp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

DIY vegan scalp scrub #3
  • 1 tablespoon of vegan conditioner or coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of sea salt (for oily scalp) or raw sugar

DIY vegan scalp scrub #4
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of raw sugar
  • a few drops of tea tree essential oil

Because of its high level of acidity, apple cider vinegar can help balance the scalp’s pH. This is especially helpful if you need to clarify your scalp of hard water build-up.

Method:

  1. Choose one of the DIY recipes.
  2. Mix all of these ingredients together.
  3. Gently massage the scrub into your scalp.
  4. Leave it on for about 5 minutes.
  5. Rinse it out with warm water.
  6. Shampoo and condition.

By massaging a scrub into your scalp, you’ll stimulate blood circulation, remove stubborn oil and build-up, and deliver oxygen to your scalp. In turn, this encourages hair growth. Give it a try!
