Does your make-up make you look older?

My mum is not a make-up fan; actually, she is one of the few women I know who actually hate wearing make-up.  But on those occasions when she feels like she “has to” wear it, she trusts me to do her make-up and make her look flawless.
While doing my mother’s makeup, I learned some tips and tricks about applying makeup on ageing skin.
Too much of anything is never good, especially with bright makeup, which tends to make you look older.  The truth, which many seem to ignore, is that the heavier your makeup, the older you look.  Here are some tips to make you look younger!

Face make-up

Heavy foundations and powders, can settle into lines and wrinkles making them look deeper.  Instead, go for a sheer tinted moisturiser, dewy pink blushes on the apples of your cheeks and a swipe of bronzer across the forehead, cheeks and nose.  Creamy formulas work better than powders.  Always apply a moisturizer before putting on the foundation.  This helps makeup slide on smoothly and evenly.

Eye make-up

Heavy eye makeup is particularly ageing.  As you begin to notice lines around your eyes, avoid frosted and shimmery shadows.  The sparkle highlights every line and wrinkle.  On the other hand, silky, matte shadows blend into your skin and hide fine lines.

These shadows are a no-no! - Too much sparkle.

Eyeliner makes eyes look full and wide open, taking attention away from any signs of ageing.  However, dark liquid liners and mascaras can look too harsh on ageing skin.  Instead, use powder eyeliner (or line your eyes with a shadow), for a softer look.  For the same reason, you can also use brown mascara, instead of black.  Another tip for looking younger is to fill in sparse brows to make them more defined.
Lip make-up

Lips get thinner and drier with age.  Dark and matte lip liners and lipsticks draw attention to the fine lines around your lips.  Use lip gloss for a fresh, youthful shine.  You can use gloss on top of your lipstick or just use a tinted gloss.

Remember, if you take good care of your skin and stay away from make-up that ages you, you can look your best at any age.  Make-up is a very powerful tool; use it with caution!
