Eleven (11) ways to stop a toothache quickly

November 21, 2022 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

This weekend I did not publish any blog posts or YouTube videos because I had a terrible migraine caused by wisdom tooth pain. The pain was unbearable, and I didn't do anything productive all weekend.

A toothache is a pain in and around the teeth and jaws. When you have a toothache, the trigeminal nerve can get irritated and trigger a migraine headache. If the toothache is left untreated, it can cause other symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound.

If the pain lasts more than two days, it is best to see a dentist. Until then, the following home remedies may provide some relief from the discomfort.

1. Take painkillers

Taking a painkiller can help to quiet tooth pain. Be careful and follow the recommended dosage.

2. Analgesic gel

An analgesic gel can temporarily numb the gums around your affected tooth. This will relieve the pain and let you get some sleep before you can see a dentist.

3. Elevate your head

When going to sleep, try supporting your head up with pillows or sleep upright in a chair, if possible. Lying down can aggravate your pain because blood pressure in your head increases when you are in a flat position.

4. Warm, salt water rinse

A salt water rinse might not immediately alleviate your pain, however, it will help rinse your mouth of the bacteria that could be causing your toothache to begin with. Rinse your mouth for a couple of seconds and spit it out.

5. Cold compress

Icing your cheek on the outside of the affected tooth will numb the area and reduce the swelling causing the pain.

6. Drink peppermint tea

Drinking any tea can help soothe your aching tooth, but peppermint tea has qualities that can help numb the affected area, as well.

7. Clove oil

Clove oil is considered nature’s analgesic. It can be used as a rinse or applied directly to your tooth. To rinse, add a drop of oil to a glass of water and use it as a mouthwash. To apply to your tooth, dilute some oil with water, place a few drops on a cotton ball, and put it on your tooth.

8. Thyme oil

Thyme oil can be used as a rinse or applied directly to your tooth, just like clove oil.

9. Tea bags

You can apply either a cold or warm tea bag to your tooth. Make sure it has cooled down so that it is not too hot. Or try placing a used tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes, then apply it to your tooth. Like I said before, peppermint tea is especially good for toothaches.

10. Vanilla extract

Vanilla is another natural anti-inflammatory. It can also help to numb the pain caused by a toothache. Try putting a small amount on your finger or a cotton swab and applying it to the affected area a few times a day.

11. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is thought to be anti-bacterial and has properties that contribute to pain relief. You can use wheatgrass juice as a mouthwash or chew on some raw wheatgrass.

I hope you find this helpful next time you have a toothache!

DIY: Head lice prevention

September 26, 2022 2 Comments

Hello everyone!

It's back to school time again! Back to school can be an exciting time for both children and parents. Starting a new school year requires plenty of preparations, such as shopping for stationery, a new bag, shoes and clothes/uniform. One thing most parents do not prepare for when sending their little ones back to school is head lice.

As any reader of this blog will know, I believe in the power of natural ingredients, particularly essential oils. When you do a simple Google search, you quickly find out what essential oils are good at repelling lice, but the question is, what to do with that information? How can you use essential oils to repel head lice?

The following essential oils have been shown to effectively repel lice:

  • Lavender oil
  • Tea tree oil
  • Clove oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Geranium oil
  • Lemongrass oil

These are other essential oils that can repel head lice but are not recommended for children under six (6) years:

  • Peppermint oil
  • Anise seed oil
  • Eucalyptus oil

You can use these essential oils to make a DIY lice prevention spray or shampoo. Just follow the recipe below!

For the spray, you will need:

For children under 6 years of age-

  • 1/2 cup of distilled water
  • 2 tsp of fractionated coconut oil
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 10 drops of lavender oil
  • 5 drops of geranium oil
  • 5 drops of lemongrass oil

For anyone over 6 years of age-

  • 1/2 cup of distilled water
  • 2 tsp of fractionated coconut oil
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 10 drops of rosemary oil
  • 5 drops of geranium oil
  • 5 drops of peppermint oil
  • 10 drops of lemongrass oil
  • 10 drops of lavender oil

How to use:

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake well before use.
  3. Generously spray on scalp and hair.
  4. Brush through and style as usual.

For the shampoo -

Add the essential oils directly to a shampoo bottle and shake well. This way, you will have a DIY lice prevention shampoo! You do not need to add the coconut oil and the distilled water.

A few head lice prevention tips:

  1. Keep long hair tied up.
  2. Remind children not to share brushes, hats, scarves, etc.
  3. Use the prevention spray on brushes, combs and even backpacks!

I wish you and your kids a happy, productive and lice-free school year!

DIY: Natural whitening toothpaste

September 24, 2022 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

In a previous post, I wrote about how I make my own natural toothpaste by mixing coconut oil and baking soda. I still use that DIY recipe, together with others I like. In another post, I also talked about the benefits of activated charcoal and included teeth whitening, among numerous other benefits.

DIY: Natural toothpaste

What are the benefits of activated charcoal?

Today, I want to share a DIY recipe for an all-natural turmeric whitening toothpaste

Bamboo eco toothbrush in a glass bottle

Turmeric is a popular spice which has been used, as a healing and herbal remedy, for thousands of years. Turmeric is a well-known anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial herb, making it useful for home dental care. It is a natural product, which makes it a better alternative to commercial teeth whiteners. In fact, turmeric lacks the side effects of many commercial teeth whiteners. These include dental enamel damage, gum irritation, risk of tooth sensitivity, and more.

Possible benefits you can get from turmeric toothpaste include teeth whitening, reduced risk of gum pain and inflammation and reduced risk of gum disease.

If you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong, then a homemade zero-waste toothpaste such as this is a great choice. Made of nothing but coconut oil and turmeric, this natural homemade whitening toothpaste is all you need to deep clean your teeth.

Ingredients:

  • Organic cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Organic turmeric powder – 1 tsp

How to use:

  1. Mix the two ingredients together in a small glass jar.
  2. Take a small amount on a soft brush and gently brush your teeth.
  3. Leave it on for five (5) minutes, then spit it out.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water.
  5. Then, brush your teeth with regular toothpaste or another tooth-cleansing product to remove all traces of turmeric.

What do you think of this DIY? Will you be trying it out? Let me know in the comments section below!

Take care!

DIY: Soothing and collagen-producing (vegan) face mask

January 17, 2022 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

Today I want to share another vegan DIY beauty recipe with you, this time a soothing and collagen-producing face mask. All you need are three simple ingredients you probably already have at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • ½ a cup of cooked oats
  • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon

banana, cooked oats and cinnamon

Here's how it works:

  • Bananas are amongst the top three most nutritious fruits. They contain large amounts of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine and vitamin A, B, E, and F. Vitamin A in bananas promotes skin-cell turnover.
  • Applying cooked oatmeal to the skin can reduce skin redness and inflammation.
  • Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde (the organic compound that gives cinnamon its flavour and colour), which increases collagen levels. This means that when cinnamon is applied to the skin or ingested, collagen levels will increase.

Method:

  1. Cook the oatmeal.
  2. Mash the ripe banana in a bowl and add to the oatmeal.
  3. Add the cinnamon.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Allow the oatmeal to cool and then apply to the face.
  6. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Rinse with tepid water.

DIY: Post-holiday detox face mask

January 05, 2022 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

Now that all the presents have been opened, the delicious food devoured, and the decorations are starting to come down, you probably think you need a detox. What better way to kick off the new year than by taking care of your skin with a DIY detox mask

Let's make one thing clear: strictly speaking, the holidays and comfort food are not toxic! You do not need to "detox" from them! However, a detoxifying face mask is always a good idea!

To make this DIY mask, you will need only four simple ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp crushed ripe blueberries.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice.
  • 1 tbsp cucumber juice.
  •  2 tbsp baking soda.
cucumbers and blueberries

Blueberries contain antioxidants that protect your body from free radicals.

Lemon juice contains citrus enzymes that brighten the skin.

Cucumber juice has a cooling, soothing, de-puffing and refreshing effect.

Baking soda helps dislodge blackheads; its granules will give you extra exfoliation.

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Apply mask onto your face.
  3. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Wet your fingers with warm water and gently massage your face.
  5. Gently wash off and pat your face dry.

This mask will give you a glowing complexion! Try it and let me know your thoughts.
