In the heart of Valletta, on the once-notorious Strait Street, stands a building that has lived many lives.
The Splendid Hotel.
For decades it operated as a brothel in the city’s old red-light district. Then, one night in the late 1960s, violence tore through its upper floors.
An argument broke out between a prostitute and her client. In the bathroom of a first-floor room, he stabbed her to death.
The hotel closed its doors not long after the murder. But according to local legend, she never left.
Her restless spirit is said to still walk the empty hallways of the Splendid. Witnesses over the years have reported furniture being hurled across rooms, doors slamming with no one there, and a heavy, angry presence that lingers in the air long after the lights go out.
Today the building has been given a new purpose. It hosts art exhibitions, theatre performances, and creative events. During the day it feels almost ordinary. But when the crowds leave and the corridors fall silent, the past seems to stir again.
Some places never truly let go of what happened within their walls.
I shared a short version of this story here:
The Splendid Hotel: Valletta’s Murdered Ghost
Have you ever been inside the Splendid, or walked Strait Street after dark? Did anything feel… off? I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments.
Until next time…
