How to care for cartilage piercings in the residual summer heat

Hello, everyone!

I hope this post finds you well and that your piercings are behaving themselves despite the lingering warmth. Here in Malta the summer heat is still hanging around, and if you have any cartilage piercings (helix, tragus, conch, daith, rook… the list goes on), you already know they can be a little more sensitive than lobe piercings when the temperature and humidity rise.

Cartilage takes longer to heal and is more prone to irritation, so the combination of sweat, salt water, chlorine, and sticky air can easily cause problems if we’re not careful. Today I want to share some practical aftercare tips that have helped me (and many readers) keep cartilage piercings calm during these residual summer weeks.

Why cartilage needs extra attention in the heat

Cartilage has less blood flow than soft tissue, which means it heals more slowly and reacts more strongly to irritation. Sweat, humidity, and frequent swimming can introduce bacteria, trap moisture, or cause the jewellery to move more than usual. A little extra care now can prevent weeks of frustration later.

Practical tips for residual summer heat

1. Keep the area clean — but don’t overdo it
Continue cleaning twice a day with a sterile saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride). Avoid harsh soaps, alcohol, or tea tree oil, especially in the heat — they can dry the area out and increase irritation. Gently clean around the piercing and pat dry with clean, disposable paper tissue or a fresh cotton pad.

2. Manage sweat carefully
If you’ve been outdoors or exercising, rinse the piercing with saline as soon as you can. Sweat mixed with sunscreen or body products can sit against the jewellery and cause bumps or redness. After rinsing, make sure the area is fully dry.

3. Swimming guidelines
Sea water and chlorinated pools are not ideal for healing cartilage. If you do swim:
Rinse the piercing thoroughly with clean water or saline immediately afterwards.
Avoid submerging brand-new piercings if possible.
Consider covering the piercing with a waterproof plaster only if advised by your piercer (and remove it promptly afterwards).

4. Choose breathable jewellery and avoid unnecessary touching
Stick to implant-grade titanium or solid 14k/18k gold if your piercing is still healing. Avoid changing jewellery until it is fully healed. And as always — clean hands only if you need to adjust anything.

5. Sleep and daily habits
Try to sleep on the opposite side where possible. If both ears are pierced, a travel pillow or piercing pillow can reduce pressure. Keep hair products, headphones, and glasses away from the area when you can, as friction increases in humid weather.

6. Watch for warning signs
A little crustiness or mild redness can be normal, especially in the heat. Contact your piercer or a medical professional if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, yellow/green discharge, or a fever.

A simple summer aftercare routine

  • Morning and evening: saline cleanse + pat dry
  • After sweating or swimming: extra saline rinse
  • Throughout the day: keep hands off and let it breathe

I’ve had my tragus piercing for 25 years now, and I’ve learned that consistency and gentleness always win over complicated routines — especially when the weather is still warm and sticky.

If you’re currently healing a cartilage piercing, how is it coping with the residual heat? Do you have any tips that have worked well for you? I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments.

Until next time, take good care of yourselves (and your piercings!).

With love,
