How to survive summer heatwaves: Gentle tips for glowing through the heat

Hello, everyone!

Here we are in the thick of summer, and if the rising temperatures have left you feeling drained, sticky, and far from your usual radiant self, you’re not alone. At Cosette’s Beauty Pantry, we talk a lot about feeling beautiful from the inside out, and that includes navigating whatever Mother Nature throws our way. Heatwaves can be brutal on both body and skin, but with a few mindful adjustments, we can stay cool, comfortable, and even come out glowing on the other side.

I’ve always believed self-care isn’t just about fancy routines; it’s about listening to what your body needs in the moment. During extreme heat, that means shifting from “doing more” to protecting and supporting yourself gently. Here’s how I approach it.

1. Hydration: Make it a non-negotiable ritual
We all know we should drink more water, but in a heatwave it becomes essential. Aim for at least 3 litres a day (more if you’re active or sweating heavily). I like to make it enjoyable by infusing water with cucumber, mint, or a splash of lemon—simple additions that feel refreshing and spa-like.

Don’t forget electrolytes. Plain water is great, but when you’re losing salts through sweat, a pinch of Himalayan salt or a natural electrolyte drink can prevent that foggy, exhausted feeling. Herbal teas (chilled) like peppermint or hibiscus are lovely too—they hydrate while offering a touch of calm.

2. Protect and soothe your skin
Heat can trigger breakouts, redness, dehydration, and sensitivity. My go-to summer strategy:

  • Lightweight, breathable skincare: Switch to gel textures and hyaluronic acid serums that plump without heaviness. Avoid heavy creams or oils that can feel suffocating.
  • SPF is your best friend: Reapply every two hours if you’re outside. Look for mineral formulas that sit lightly and double as a primer.
  • Cooling rituals: Keep a facial mist in the fridge for instant refreshment. A chilled jade roller or gua sha tool can reduce puffiness and bring blood flow back in a soothing way. At night, a simple aloe vera or calming mask works wonders after a long, hot day.

3. Adjust your routines and environment
  • Timing matters: Do any outdoor activities or errands in the early morning or evening. Midday is for staying indoors with curtains drawn and fans or AC on.
  • Clothing choices: Loose, light-coloured, natural fabrics (linen and cotton are lifesavers). Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses aren’t just stylish—they’re practical armour against the sun.
  • Sleep smarter: Heat disrupts rest, which shows on your skin the next day. Use breathable bedding, a cold water bottle at your feet, or a cooling pillow spray with lavender. A lukewarm (not cold) shower before bed can lower your core temperature.

4. Eat and move with the season
Heavy, spicy, or fried foods can make you feel even warmer. Lean into fresh, hydrating produce: watermelon, cucumber, berries, leafy greens, and coconut water. Light meals like salads, smoothies, or chilled soups keep energy steady without weighing you down.

Movement-wise, swap intense workouts for gentle yoga, stretching, or swimming if possible. Even a slow evening walk once the sun dips can lift your mood without adding stress.

5. Nervous system and mindset support
Extreme heat can leave us irritable and overwhelmed. A few minutes of deep belly breathing or a short meditation can help regulate that “fight-or-flight” feeling. I also love playing soft music or reading in a cool corner of the house—it’s small but makes a big difference in how resilient you feel.

Remember, this season is temporary. Giving yourself permission to slow down and do less can actually help you feel more in control.

What about you? How do you handle heatwaves—any favourite cooling tricks, recipes, or products that have been lifesavers for you? Drop them in the comments below. I read every one and love swapping ideas in this little community.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and remember that taking care of yourself through the discomfort is one of the kindest things you can do.

With love,
