It's my birthday (and I'll blog if I want to)

May 30, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today is my 29th birthday!  I have never been one to make a big deal out of it, but I am realising that I need to celebrate getting older, and enjoy each moment because we are not promised tomorrow.  So today, there’s no new DIY beauty recipe or tutorial.  Instead, I am chilling and enjoying turning 29!

Instead of my usual devil's food birthday cake, this year I had birthday brownies!  If you didn't know; I'm a certified chocoholic! ;)

Don't forget to follow me to get the latest updates and sneak peeks!  On my Facebook page you can currently find sneak peeks of 4 product reviews that will be posted in mid-June.

I don’t see value in having someone who never uses Facebook "like" my page.  The reason I want to connect with you is to actually connect and get your feedback, not just to see my numbers go up on various platforms.  So, feel free to follow me on whichever platform you actually use.

Hello everyone!

I just realised that my 29th birthday  is only two days away!  I'm not a big fan of birthdays but still, what would a birthday be without a wish list?  I don't really need anything but here's a list of little things I'd like to get for my birthday.

OPI Little Bits of Neon Set
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Addis Ababa
NYX The Curve Felt Tip Eye Liner
NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil
An Infuser Glass Teapot (I love loose leaf teas)
NYX Butter Gloss Set Enchanted Kiss
Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser

What do you think?  What should I get myself for my b-day?

Re-grow over-plucked eyebrows! (part 2)

May 26, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

In this post I will give you more tips on how to grow back your eyebrows.  Read part 1 here!

Exfoliation is a method that can help the growth of eyebrow hair.  You can use a soft toothbrush or a spoolie to scrub and exfoliate the area.  Using the brush in circular motion will help to remove dead skin and will enhance the blood circulation.  Another way to exfoliate is by using an exfoliating scrub.  Try a DIY recipe here!  Apply the scrub in a circular motion and BE GENTLE.  Too much pressure can damage the fine, fragile hair that is already there.

The row-growing method:

You need to STOP plucking, waxing and threading!  Although this seem like a no-brainer, the messy look that will develop when you leave your brows un-touched for a while is not  flattering.

If you can't stand the idea of letting all your hairs grow out before you shape your eyebrows, try the row-growing method.  Allow hairs closest to the existing brow to grow out and SHAVE the stray hairs with an eyebrow razor.

eyebrow razor

When the row is finished growing in, start on the next row.  Shaving the hair can enhance the growth of hair, therefore using a brow razor can also stimulate growth.  Try using a brow razor to shave the areas where you want more growth to occur.  Continue growing your brows out a row at a time until they're finished growing back.  This method gives your brows a neater appearance.

Patience is the key to your success.  You cannot expect your eyebrows to  magically grow overnight.  You will have to give it time and wait for the brows to grow back.

Oh, and check out the related blog posts linked below!  If you have more tips, leave them in the comment section below.

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Pink & silver mani-pedi

May 23, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today I have another NOTD post for you.  This time it's a mani-pedi nails of the day.  I hope you like it!

This is what I'm wearing on my nails today...

I applied two coats of pink nail polish and then one coat of the silver crackle polish on top.  I applied the silver polish only on my middle and ring fingernails.

Oh, and I'm also wearing the same colours on my toenails!

Do you wear matching polish on your fingernails and toenails?  If not,  what are your favourite mani-pedi colour pairings?  Leave a comment and let me know!

My eyebrow essentials

May 21, 2014 1 Comments
Hello everyone!

Having naturally dark brows, I've never felt the need to fill them in until a couple of years ago.  Before, the only maintenance my brows received was regular tweezing.

Nowadays my eyebrow routine is a bit more elaborate but I assure you... it's worth it!  My eyebrow essentials are; a good pair of tweezers, eyebrow scissors, eyebrow razor, eyebrow comb/brush, eyebrow pencil and eyebrow gel.

These are my current favourites:

If you would like to know more about my eyebrow routine or how I use these products, leave a comment and let me know!  What are your eyebrow essentials?

Outfit inspiration - The skort

May 16, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

After the DIY posts, the NOTD posts, the Tag posts, the Monthly favourites and the Products I regret buying, today I'm starting a new blog series, this time it's fashion related.  This is my first Outfit inspiration post!  I hope you like it.

As I'm sure you've noticed the skort trend is very popular this season.  A skort is essentially a pair of shorts with a fabric section covering the front, resembling a skirt.  Personally, I'm loving this trend so I've put together two outfit ideas, both featuring the skort.

I hope you find this helpful.  Tell me in the comment section below which outfit is your favourite; the multi-coloured or the black & white.

Have an awesome weekend!

My mascara secret

May 14, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Don't you hate it when you purchase a new mascara but you don't really like the wand it comes with?  Or when you have to throw away your old mascara tube along with your favourite wand?  I do!

Personally, I LOVE L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara.  The thin, flexible plastic wand, coats and separates each lash and makes my eyelashes  look fuller and longer!  It give me the  "false lashes" look without wearing falsies.

However, I still like to try out new mascaras.  I personally love volumising mascaras, but I don't like the ginormous wands they usually come with.  They make it almost impossible to apply mascara without ruining the rest of your eye make-up!

So here's my "mascara secret"...

I throw away my old mascara tubes but save the mascara wands.  I just clean the wands and reuse them!  If there’s a particular mascara wand that works very well for your, why not use that with other mascara formulas?

All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Clean your favourite wand with an antibacterial liquid soap and leave it to air dry.
  2. Once it's completely dry,  you can use it to apply any mascara you want.
  3. You can dip it straight into the tube, but I prefer a more hygienic method.  Gently swipe your favourite (clean) wand onto the wand of the mascara you want to use (which is loaded with product).
  4. Apply mascara with your favourite wand.

Remember: Discard mascara after about four months of usage.  Bacteria build-up can lead to eye infection and irritation.  For more info read Mascara 101.

And there you have it!  Easy, right?

I hope you find this helpful!  What's your favourite mascara?  Have you ever applied your mascara with a different wand?  Leave a comment and let me know.

DIY: Removing a gel manicure (2 methods)

May 12, 2014 1 Comments
Hello everyone!
In today's post I will tell you everything you need to know about removing a gel manicure at home!
One downside to gel manicures is the removal.  You can’t just use a regular nail polish remover.  It’s also very tempting to pick and peel off the polish once the nail starts to grow out or the gel begins to lift.  DON'T DO IT!  This will essentially damage and weaken your natural nails.  Salons do offer to remove the polish for you but, this would cost you time and money.
Fortunately you can remove the gel at home yourself, the same way your nail technician would!

You will need:

For the soak-off method -
  • nail file/emery board
  • nail buffer
  • pure acetone
  • 10 cotton balls
  • 10 small pieces of foil
  • an orange stick

For the file-off method -
  • 2 nail file/emery board (a course one and a finer one)
  • nail buffer

The soak-off method:
NOTE: Choose a well lit and ventilated area!
  1. Soak 5 cotton balls in acetone and lay them on your nails.  Wrap your foil squares around each finger and let it sit for at least 10-15 minutes.  Acetone is a chemical that reacts with the gel nail to loosen its adhesive and free it from your natural nail.
  2. When you pull the foil off, don’t unwrap it, just pull it straight off the tip of your finger.  That way it stays the same shape in case you need to slide your finger back in it for a few more minutes.
  3. Start scraping the gel nail off with your orange stick.  It should fall right off.  If there’s some that seems hard to remove, put it back in to soak a little longer.
  4. Once you remove all the colour, shape your nail with an emery board and use a 4-way buffer to buff and polish.
  5. Repeat the same procedure on your other hand.

If you cringe at the idea of soaking your fingers in acetone, there is an alternative.  If you do not want to use any chemicals to remove your gel manicure, you should try the file-off method.

The file-off method:
  1. File down the surface of the nails - Use a coarse nail file/emery board.  File gently and in crosshatches to keep the work evenYou don't want to keep filing once you get down to the natural nail, since you could damage it.
  2. File the remaining gel with a finer-grit emery board.  Work slowly and gently to make sure you don't file the surface of your natural nail. Though damage is hard to avoid when using this method, working gently will minimize it. Continue until the gels have been completely filed away.
  3. Use a buffer to smooth the surfaces of your nails, which may have become scratched from the filing process.

I used the file-off method to remove my gel manicure.  I have to admit that I did scratch my natural nails.  They do look a little crazy without nail polish, but I did not damage my nail bed.  By the time I finished my regular manicure (shaping, buffing, base coat, polish, top coat), the scratches were hardly noticeable!
So which method is the best?  It depends on you and which one is more convenient for you.  If your skin reacts to acetone, it is advisable that you go for the file-off method to avoid any irritation.  However if you don't like filing your nails then you should go for the soak-off method.  The file-off method is more time consuming.
I hope this helps some of you the next time you’ll need to remove a gel manicure.  How do you remove your gel manicures?

Products I regret buying #1

May 10, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

I usually research products I'm going to buy online before I make a purchase, but sometimes I still manage to buy some products that just don't work for me.  So I thought I'd start a blog series on products that I don't like and regret buying;  kind of my anti-favourites!

Nivea BB Cream in Light

The main reason why I do not like this product is that it's to dark and orangey.  I am fair skinned, and when I tried this out for the first time, it looked like I had a tan!  The second time I used it, I mixed a tiny amount with my moisturise, but it still looked fake.  I also didn't like the smell.  This BB cream has that signature "Nivea scent" which is fine for body products but, I do not use any scented products on my face.  And SPF10 is way too low!

Garnier Multi Lights Kit 4

I wanted to add some balayage highlights to give more dimension to my dark hair.  So I headed to my local supermarket and looked for a highlighting kit.  To my disappointment, the store only carries one kit; the Garnier Multi Lights Kit 4.  It is a DIY auburn highlighting kit for natural or coloured brown hair.  The kit is not meant to be used on very dark hair tones, like mine, but since it was the only kit available, I decided to try it out regardless.

The non-drip formula is way too thick.  I left it on for 30 minutes; the maximum developing time.  When I washed my hair,  I didn't notice any change in my hair colour!  I was hoping the change would be more noticeable on dry hair but still, it is barely noticeable.
The kit doesn't come with a deep conditioner, so I applied the coconut oil deep conditioning treatment I mentioned in my April favourites.  I will not be repurchasing this product, however I must say that the kit did not damage my hair.

W7 Automatic Eye Liner in Black (Waterproof)

This eye liner has to be stored upside down, which is very inconvenient for me.  The tip dries really quickly, so you have to be very quick when applying the product.  Once the tip is dry, you have to  leave the product upside down and wait, which is not practical at all.

Maybelline Superstay Powergloss in Citrus Glow/450

This is not a recent purchase.  I got this gloss a long time ago, but since this is my first "Products I regret buying" post, I wanted to mention it.  The colour is really pretty, a light natural pink.  However, I don't like the gloss-side.  It's way too sticky and it feels like glue on my lips.  The colour is longstanding however, it does not last 12 hours, more like 3 or 4.

Have you ever tried any of these products?  Did you like them?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Revamped gel manicure

May 07, 2014 1 Comments

Hello everyone!

Remember the glitter gel manicure I showed you in my previous NOTD post?  Well it's been two weeks and as you can see in the photos below, now it doesn't look as good!

I don't want to remove it yet (I'm worried the process will damage my nails), so I decided to revamp it!

On my glitter nails, I used a Shimmery Burgundy nail polish to paint a v-shape over the gap between my cuticles and the gel.  I also applied two coats of  the same polish over the teal colour.  I sealed this manicure with one coat of top coat, as usual.

I really like the shimmery burgundy and gold colour combination!

With this revamped mani I hope I can put off removing the gel for at least a week, allowing my nail to grow a little longer.

Do you like my revamped gel mani?  Tell me in the comments below!

Tag post: My hair

May 05, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Today I want to talk about my hair, so here's my hair tag!  Keep reading to learn more about my hair story.

When was the first time you got your hair cut?
My mum always says that she cut my hair when I was only 2 days old!  Apparently I was born with long hair. :)

When was the first time you got your hair coloured or highlighted.
When I was 15.

What is the longest and the shortest you hair has ever been?
When I was 9 I had knee length hair.  Yes, I said KNEE... I was a real life Rapunzel.  And when I was 12 I got a pixie cut (talk about extremes)!  Throughout the years my hair has been all the lengths in between.  However, as an adult I never let my longest layer grow past my waist.

How often do you trim/cut your hair?
I'm kind of obsessed with cutting my hair.  I cut my hair myself.  I usually cut 2 inches every 8 week.  There were times when I trimmed my hair more than once a month (*scissor happy*).  My hair grows really quickly, which is both a blessing and a curse! ;)

Do you wear your hair "natural" or do you straighten/curl it on a regular basis?
From the age of 13 until 20/21, I used to straighten my hair RELIGIOUSLY.  I would never wear my hair down unless it was perfectly straight.  I finally learned to love my natural hair... frizz and all! ;)

What’s the secret ingredient that your hair LOVES the most?
Coconut oil, without a doubt.  Check out the best hair treatment I ever used, here!

How often do you dye your hair?
After the first week I start noticing re-growth, however I wait for at least 4 weeks before re-colouring my hair.  Click here for at-home hair dye tips!

What do you think about extensions?
I personally never used them.  If the person wearing them makes them blend in well with their hair then I think they are okay.  They are especially useful for people with thin hair.

What is one hair care rule you never follow?
I only use shampoo on my scalp, not on my hair.  I cleanse my hair with conditioner (co-washing).

Do you use vitamins/supplements to improve the health of your hair?
No, I just try to eat healthy.

What is your go-to hair style when you’re in a rush?
A top knot.

I hope you enjoyed this tag and I would love to read your answers!  I tag each and every one of you reading this post!  Leave your answers in the comment section.

April favourites

May 03, 2014 3 Comments
Hello everyone!

For me last month was all about prepping my skin and my hair for "the big event".  My brother got married on Friday 25th and I was his witness.  :)

Without further ado, here are my April beauty favourites:

Holland & Barrett Aloe Vera Gel Bio Active Skin Treatment + Vitamin E Capsules (100iu)

I usually mix the content of a capsule of vitamin E with a blob of Aloe vera and use instead of my night cream a couple of times a week.  During the month of April, I applied this mixture more often than that.  Both ingredients help to heal and regenerate the skin.  Whenever I use Aloe vera and vitamin E at night, I wake up to glowing, clear, even skin.  I LOVE it!  Both Aloe vera and vitamin E can be used for active acne, acne scars, pigmentation, anti-ageing and dry skin among other skin conditions.

Biafine Topical Emulsion

I use this as a spot treatment on any blemishes I get.  This product also reduces the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Product description:
Biafine is a water-based emulsion formulated for the dressing and management of superficial wounds, minor abrasions, dermal ulcers, donor sites, 1st and 2nd-degree burns, including sunburns, and radiation dermatitis.  Biafine provides an optimum moist environment for the healing process and isolates the wound from harmful germs and other external contamination.

Pure Coconut Oil + Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner

I melt some coconut oil, mix it with my Suave conditioner and distribute it evenly on my hair.  Then I tie my hair in a top knot with a spring hair tie and go to sleep.  The next morning I cleanse my hair as usual.  This treatment leaves my hair so soft, I don't need to apply any leave-in products whenever I use it.  No serum, no leave in conditioner, no anti-frizz cream...NOTHING!  This is huge for me, my hair usually turns into a frizz ball as soon as it dries if I don't use any leave-in products.  This is by far the best overnight hair treatment I ever used.

What were your April favourites?  Have you used any of my favourites before?  Leave a comment and let me know!
