Primer 101

March 31, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

Make-up primer is one of those beauty products that can make a big difference in the look and wear of your make-up.  It preps your skin for make-up and creates a smooth base.  Even if you are happy with the foundation you are currently using, a layer of primer underneath can bring it to a whole new level.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you learn how to apply make-up primer:
  • Moisturise: Apply a light moisturiser before your primer and allow it to fully absorb into your skin for a few minutes.  Primer is applied after sunscreen and moisturiser and before any foundation or tinted moisturiser.

  • Blend: A little primer goes a long way, so apply a pea sized amount with your fingertips and starting in the centre of the face, work your way out.  You can also apply the product with a damp foundation wedge sponge.  Be sure you cover all areas as evenly as possible, use a little extra in places where your make-up tends to wear off quickly, such as in the T-zone or over large pores.

  • Apply foundation: Once your primer is on, allow a few minutes for it to set before applying foundation.

  • Finish with powder: To really lock in your make-up, apply a dusting of translucent powder over your base, specifically focusing on the T-zone area where make-up tends to slide off first due to oil production.
Tinted formulas: If your skin is dull, light pink primers can add a glow.  Lilac shades  brighten pale skin, and green formulas neutralize redness.
Eye primers: Gently patted around the eyes and on the lids.  Eye primers prevent make-up from creasing, soften crow's-feet, and eliminate redness.
Acne: Skip any spot treatments if your primer already contains anti-acne ingredients (like salicylic acid or tea tree oil).

Do you use a make-up primer?  Tell me how it works for you in the comments section below!

Give your hair a break!

March 27, 2014 0 Comments
Hello everyone!

I have a confession to make: I hate wearing my hair down!  I feel like it's always in my face.  My hair is usually pulled back tightly in a top knot bun.

Hair buns and ponytails are good at keeping hair out of your face, but they can also cause major damage.  Tight hairstyles can add stress to hair follicles, causing breakage.

You should try to keep tight styles to a minimum.  I am currently working on this.  If you are anything like me, here are a few tips that will help:

Upgrade your hair bands
Removing hair elastics often leads to breakage.  When you must tie your hair, opt for hair ties that slide easily out of hair.  Look for metal-free elastics, which help to prevent breakage.

I'm currently loving the spring hair bands.  They are even save to use on my curly hair!

Wear it loose
Make sure it's not too tight and it's loosely secured with a hair band.

Switch it up
Consistently tying your hair in the same spot can weaken the hair shaft and result in breakage.  Instead of always putting your hair up the same way, switch things up: wear a high ponytail one day, a low one another, a braid on one side, a braid on the other, etc.

Let your scalp relax
When you're relaxing out at home, give your hair the chance to relax too.  Leave your hair down during your time off so your poor scalp can take a break.

Don't wear wet hair up
Avoid tying  your hair when it's wet;  when your hair is wet, it's at its weakest and breaks easily.

Sleep on silk
Sleeping on silk pillowcases reduces breakage and can also reduces frizz.  At the very least, wear your hair down when you sleep.

Hello everyone!

A few months back, I talked to you about the the launch of GlamST; a new platform that helps you find the perfect beauty product.

GlamST allows you to virtually try out different make-up products from the comfort of your own home.  Let me tell you a bit more about the site, and show you my virtual makeover looks!
Once you join, you can choose a model or upload your photo.  If you choose the later, the site will take you through a few steps to adjust your photo and then you're ready to go!  Once you have your photo ready, it's time to start testing products!  There are three sections: Face, Eyes, and Lips.  Each section has a few subsections, such as, foundation, mascara and gloss, among others.
As you try on products you also have the option to control the amount of product you apply.  If you decide you like something, you can save the look or add it to your shopping basket.  It's that simple!
For my makeover, I chose to create two different looks!  Check out the before and after photos and the products I used:

February favourites

Hello everyone!

This is my first monthly favourites post.  Here are some of my favourite beauty products from last month!

St. Ives Naturally Clear Apricot Scrub Blemish Fighting
It claims to gently cleans pores and helps fight  blemishes without over drying.  It's oil-free and has 2% salicylic acid.  I love this scrub and so far it seems to work.

Suave Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil
This oil is infused with argan oil.  I use a few drops on wet hair.  It conditions the hair without weighing it down.

Cien Anti-Aging Hand Cream
It's intensely moisturising and protects against sun damage.  It is very rich and a little goes a very long way.

Sibella Lip Balm
This is my second tube!  It smells great and it's very moisturising.  Definitely one of my favourite lip balms ever!

The best brushes for your hair

This post is brought to you by Mont Bleu. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hello everyone!

Hairbrushes are an essential cosmetic tool.  As you may know, the best brushes for your hair are considered to be those with natural boar bristles.
Boar bristles are easier on hair than cheap plastic brushes.  Plastic hairbrushes aren't necessarily bad for your hair but they just don't benefit hair as much as natural bristles.  Boar bristles have the same structure as our hair.  They distribute natural oils, polish hair, and smooth the cuticle.  The bristles also gently massage your scalp, increasing blood flow to your hair follicles.

Mont-Bleu offers you high-quality wooden hairbrushes with natural boar bristles with massage pins in between.  Not only that, but they also offer a selection of beautifully decorated luxury wooden brushes. You can choose the right hairbrush for you.  Plain or hand decorated with Swarovski® Elements crystals to brings a sparkle to your everyday tool!  A great gift idea for beauty geeks or for yourself!

When looking for a good brush, consider if you need a round brush (great for blowouts) or a paddle brush (best for detangling).  Mont Bleu's brushes also have ergonomic handles; you won’t feel tiredness in your hands during blow dry or simple combing.

Mont Bleu's hair brushes are designed in Germany and hand-decorated in Europe.  Their quality meets the highest standards.
Remember a good hairbrush is an investment, a quality brush will last a long time.  Use the code SHB14 to get a 30% discount on all hairbrushes from Design Glassware by Mont Bleu E-shop.  Go get yourself a high-quality hairbrush.  You won't regret it!
