5 Ways to use coconut oil in your beauty routine

A couple of weeks ago, I talked about different beauty oils.  Today, I wanted to expand on one of them in particular – coconut oil!  
Coconut oil is used in many natural beauty products, and for good reason:  It's naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal  it's an excellent moisturiser, it can penetrate hair better than other oils, and it also smells heavenly. 

Below are 5 different ways to incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine.

To shave your legs
Coconut oil makes an amazing shaving cream substitute.  Conventional shaving cream is a cocktail of chemicals that you don't want on your skin.  Coconut oil, on the other hand, is all natural and smells divine. Plus, its skin-soothing properties will leave your legs looking hydrated (but never greasy).

As a deep hair conditioner
Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can be fully absorbed into the hair shaft, instead of just sitting on the surface.  Apply a quarter-size blob to your dry hair.  Once you've distributed it throughout your hair, wrap your hair on top of your head and wait 30 minutes (or you can even leave it on overnight). You'll want to place a soft towel over your pillow or sleep in a shower cap.  In the morning, cleanse and condition as usual.

To remove eye make-up
Coconut oil is one of the gentlest ways to remove make-up   Apply some to your eye area, and wipe off with a warm, damp towel.  You’ll be amazed at how fast it works!  The best part is that any leftover oil will hydrate the gentle skin around your eyes and even decrease fine lines.  And yes, coconut oil even works on waterproof mascara!  

As a body moisturiser
To give your skin a silky glow, apply coconut oil right after you step out of the shower.  Be careful though – a little goes a long way.

In a luscious body scrub
Who needs to buy body scrub when you can make your own?  Melt ½ cup of coconut oil at very low heat. Pour it over 1 cup of brown (or white) sugar and stir well.  Coconut oil also has anti-fungal properties, so it makes a great foot scrub as well.

Nail bed rehab!

Hello everyone!

Do you have short nail beds or long nail beds?  What’s the difference anyway?  

The size and shape of the nail should be in proportion to the size and shape of the nail bed.  When your nails are within proportion, they are at their strongest and most attractive.

I recently noticed that my nail beds are a lot shorter than they used to be.  How did this happen?

thought about it and I realised that I am constantly scooping under my nails every time I wash my hands (and that's like a gazillion times a day!).  Now that I am aware of this “bad habit” I am trying my best to stop doing it.  I hope that if I stop “scooping”, my nail beds can grow back to the length they used to be.  

I read somewhere that once you damage your nail bed it cannot grow back.  On the other hand, my mum used to bite her nails and she used to have short nail beds.  Now four years after she stopped biting her nails, her nail beds are much, much longer. 

Here is what I’m doing at the moment:
  • Not “scooping” under my nails when washing my hands.
  • Using a nail brush to clean under my nails.
  • I push back my cuticles and moisture my hands and nail (at least once a day).
  • Keeping nails at a shorter length to prevent breakage.
  • Not clipping my nails all the way down.
  • Using only a gentle nail file to shape my nails.
  • Keeping nails painted so that I am less likely to see anything under the nails and try to clean it out.

Nature's perfect skin care product?

Hello everyone!
After a long hiatus, I'm back with another natural DIY beauty recipe.
Watermelon isn't just a sweet summer treat; it makes a great ingredient for a DIY toner too. 
Watermelon can be used both internally and externally for its beauty benefits.  It can benefit both the skin and the whole body with its vitamins and nutrients.  Watermelon can act as an exfoliant and will cleanse and tone your skin as well.  Watermelons could just be nature's perfect skin care product.

  • ½  cup watermelon
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel 
  • 1 tablespoon distilled water

  • Blend the watermelon in a food processor or blender (including seeds), until smooth.
  • Pour the watermelon puree in a bowl, add the witch hazel and water, and mix well.
  • Pour the mixture into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid. 
  • Before applying the watermelon toner to your face, first test it on your inner arm
  • Pull your hair away from your face, wash and pat dry your face.
  • Soak a cotton ball/pad with the toner and apply to your face.
  • Allow the toner to stay on your face for a few minutes, rinse and moisturise as usual.  
  • The toner should last for about a week stored in your refrigerator.
