Know your ingredients: Niacinamide

October 05, 2022 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

Today I am starting a new blog series titled Know your ingredients, in which I will highlight a specific active ingredient

I chose to focus on niacinamide as my first ingredient. Why? Because if I had to pick one active ingredient that I can safely recommend to anyone, it would be niacinamide.

Also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinamide, this ingredient can be used by almost everyone. Niacinamide is a versatile skincare ingredient that is used for a wide range of skin conditions. Niacinamide also helps the skin produce more ceramides, helping maintain a healthy skin barrier. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for treating acne, rosacea and other inflammatory conditions. Because of this, it is recommended for those with sensitive skin. Besides, niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores by regulating sebum. It can help combat hyperpigmentation and even help smooth lines and wrinkles. These properties make this super ingredient suitable for all ages, from teens to those with mature skin.

Niacinamide has very low irritancy although, in high concentrations (10% and over) can cause flushing and irritation in sensitive skin. I use a 15% niacinamide serum in the morning because I know my skin can handle it. Then, I use a different serum at nighttime. However, it can be used morning and night. Studies show that niacinamide is effective at 2% - 5% concentration. You can layer a niacinamide serum with other serums but always be careful when mixing two potent active ingredients. By doing so, you increase the potential for irritation.

Adding topical niacinamide to your skincare routine is simple and low-risk: Buy a product that contains it, and apply it as directed.

Do you use niacinamide in your skincare routine? What is your favourite active ingredient? Leave a comment and let me know!

November 12, 2021 0 Comments

Hello everyone!

I am 36 years old and, I know that you cannot get completely rid of wrinkles, fine lines, and other ageing signs. However, you can slow the process down and make your skin look youthful. In this post, I want to share a homemade anti-ageing serum that will help reduce the signs of ageing

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 3 capsules vitamin E
  • 2 tbsp rose water
  • 5 drops lavender or rosehip essential oil (optional)
  • 1 tbsp glycerin

The essential oil is optional because some people with sensitive skin avoid using them on their faces.

Method:

  1. Place the aloe vera gel in a bowl.
  2. Add vitamin E capsules.
  3. Add rose water and mix well.
  4. Add glycerin and mix again.
  5. Lastly, add 5 drops of essential oil.
  6. Store this anti-ageing serum in a clean, airtight container.

This anti-ageing serum has incredible benefits for your skin as it is made with all-natural ingredients. Keep reading.

Do you brush your face?!

November 02, 2010 2 Comments
Hello everyone!

Lately, the use of facial brushes seems to be gaining popularity.  There are various facial brushes available on the market; ranging from small manual ones, that look like a toothbrush, to larger electric ones with various attachments.

A soft-bristle face brush is used to get a more radiant complexion by gently loosens dead skin cells and impurities while stimulating circulation.  Most brushes are gentle enough for all skin types.  Besides deep cleansing and softening the skin, facial brushing can also help reduces the appearance of acne scars and fine lines.

How to use:

Splash warm water onto the face and neck and apply your cleansing product.  Gently massage into the skin, using the face brush, in small circular movements, then rinse with warm water.  After use, splash your face with cool water and pat dry.  Follow with a toner and moisturiser suitable for your skin type.

If you have whiteheads when using this, make sure to clean your brush with antiseptic soap and water and wash off any residue before use. Be sure to go over those spots really gently.

Tip:

I also find that this is the quickest and safest way to get rid of blackheads.  Blackheads (impurities that block the pores) will come to the surface while brushing, making it very easy to extract with a blackhead extractor.
