Hello, everyone!
I hope this post finds you feeling empowered and ready to celebrate the incredible strength of women everywhere. If you’ve already watched my latest reel on Instagram and YouTube Short (the one where I talk about why we still need this day so badly), thank you. Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I wanted to expand on those thoughts in a proper blog post here in my little corner of the internet, Cosette’s Beauty Pantry. Because while we’re all about glowing skin, self-care rituals, and feeling beautiful inside and out, true beauty starts with equality, respect, and the freedom for every woman to thrive.
This year’s official theme is “Give to Gain” – a beautiful reminder that when we give support, resources, visibility, and opportunities to women and girls, we all gain a better, fairer, kinder world. The UN is also highlighting "Rights. Justice. Action.' For ALL women and girls.” Both messages feel especially urgent right now. Because despite 115 years of International Women’s Day, progress is still painfully slow in too many areas.
Let’s start with the numbers – they’re sobering but important. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2025, the global gender gap is only 68.8% closed. That’s a tiny 0.3 percentage point improvement from the year before. At this rate, it will take 123 years to reach full parity. One hundred and twenty-three years! That means your future granddaughters (or great-granddaughters) might still be fighting battles we thought were won decades ago.
Break it down, and it gets even clearer why we can’t afford to treat today as just another hashtag holiday:
- Education is almost there – 95.1% of the gap closed. Girls are outpacing boys in school completion in many places. That’s genuine progress; we should celebrate loudly.
- Health and survival stands at 96.2%. Women are living longer, healthier lives in most countries.
- But economic participation and opportunity? Only 61% closed. Women make up nearly 40% of the global workforce yet earn, on average, 20% less than men for similar work. The gender pay gap refuses to budge fast enough.
- And political empowerment? A shocking 22.9% closed. Women hold far too few seats in parliaments, cabinets, and boardrooms. We’re still waiting for the day when half the world’s leaders look like half the world’s population.
UN Women’s latest reports paint an even starker picture. Women and girls currently enjoy just 64% of the legal rights that men do globally. In nearly 70% of countries surveyed, women face more barriers accessing justice than men. Systems meant to protect us are failing – from courts that don’t believe survivors to laws that still treat domestic violence as a “family matter". Conflict, political backlash, and rising authoritarianism are rolling back hard-won rights in plain sight. Violence against women remains a global emergency: nearly 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime, most often from an intimate partner.
And here’s the part that really tugs at my heart as someone who runs a beauty and self-care space: when women are held back economically or live in fear, it doesn’t just affect them – it affects entire families and communities. When a woman earns her own money, she invests more in her children’s education and health. When she feels safe and valued, she can pursue her dreams, whether that’s launching a business, creating art, or simply enjoying the little joys like a Sunday face mask and a good book. Gender equality isn’t a “women’s issue". It’s a human issue. Closing the gap could add $342 trillion to the global economy by 2050. Imagine what that could mean for healthcare, climate action, innovation… and yes, even the beauty industry, where women already dominate but still face unequal pay and leadership ceilings.
I see the pushback sometimes online. “We’ve had equality for years – why do we still need Women’s Day?” Or worse, “It’s become too political.” But the data doesn’t lie. In 2026 we’re still dealing with child marriage in too many places, period poverty that keeps girls out of school, workplace harassment that forces talented women to quit, and AI systems that risk amplifying old biases rather than dismantling them. Recent surveys show confidence in gender equality is actually fading among some senior female executives. Backlash is real.
Yet there is hope – and that’s why today matters more than ever. We’ve seen incredible wins: nearly 100 countries have scrapped discriminatory laws in just the last five years. More girls than ever are finishing secondary school. Women are leading climate movements, tech startups, and peace negotiations. In my own little world, I see it every day through the women who message me saying a simple skincare routine helped them reclaim a moment of self-love after a tough week. Small acts matter. They build confidence. Confidence builds courage. Courage changes the world.
That’s the spirit of “Give To Gain.” Giving doesn’t have to be grand. You can give by:
- Mentoring a younger woman in your field
- Sharing educational resources about financial independence
- Calling out unequal treatment when you see it (even if it’s uncomfortable)
- Supporting women-owned businesses (hello, indie beauty brands!)
- Donating to organisations fighting gender-based violence
- Simply listening to a friend’s story and believing her
Previously, I talked about how beauty and self-care are acts of rebellion when the world tries to diminish your worth. Today I’m doubling down on that. Taking care of your skin, your mind, and your boundaries – that’s giving to yourself. And when you feel strong and radiant, you have more to give to others. It’s a beautiful cycle.
So as we mark this 115th International Women’s Day, let’s not just post the mimosa or purple flowers and move on. Let’s commit to action. Whether you’re a student, a mum, a CEO, a retiree, or somewhere in between – your voice, your choices, and your support matter.
Here’s my question for you in the comments: What is one small thing you’re going to “give” this year – to yourself, to another woman, or to the cause of equality – so that we can all “gain” a little more? Maybe it’s reading a book by a female author, negotiating your next pay rise, volunteering at a women’s shelter, or simply complimenting a stranger on her confidence. I read every single comment and love hearing your stories.
Thank you for being part of this community. Whether you’re here for the wellness tips, true crime or eerie tales, the honest chats, or the occasional deep-dive like this one, I’m so grateful. You make Cosette’s Beauty Pantry feel like a safe, uplifting space, and today I want to remind every one of you: you are worthy, you are powerful, and you deserve every opportunity to shine.
Happy International Women’s Day. Let’s keep giving so we can all keep gaining.
With love,
P.S. If you haven’t watched the reel yet, pop over to my Instagram or YouTube – I’d love to know what you thought! And don’t forget to tag a woman who inspires you today. Let’s flood the internet with positivity.
